On February 28, DKU Athletics and the DKU Language and Culture Center jointly organized an immersive cultural exchange at Huzhou Zhili Yacun Middle School, led by Coach Quanwei Yan from DKU Athletics. Focused on Wushu and Bingdao, the event featured traditional Wushu performances and Wushu Bingdao exhibitions.

As a designated Bingdao-specialized school in Huzhou, Yacun Middle School collaborated with DKU to host a series of activities, creating an interactive platform to promote Chinese traditional culture on a global stage.

At Yacun Middle School’s Jingheng Wushu Exhibition Hall, DKU students explored the evolution of Chinese Wushu over thousands of years. They also learned about the school’s “educating through Wushu philosophy.” From ancient bronze weapons to modern training equipment, and from school values to specialized courses, the blend of historical heritage and contemporary education gave DKU’s international students a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.

DKU teachers and students personally experience basic Wushu Bingdao techniques.

During the event, Yacun Middle School’s Wushu team delivered a dynamic Bindo performance, skillfully wielding long spears and short sticks with precision and power. DKU students then had the opportunity to practice basic Wushu Bindo techniques under the guidance of professional coaches from the Huzhou Wushu Bindo Association and student instructors from Yacun Middle School’s Wushu Bindo club. Through hands-on training, they overcame language barriers and connected through martial arts’ shared discipline and spirit.

Following this, DKU students demonstrated Tai Chi and Baguazhang, showcasing the philosophy of balance and harmony through graceful, flowing movements. Yacun Middle School responded with a vibrant lion dance performance, where the rhythmic drumming and energetic leaps brought the lion to life. The energy of the performance and the cultural exchange deepen mutual appreciation and understanding between students.

Principal Chen Xingen of Yacun Middle School remarked, “Wushu is a universal language that transcends borders. We look forward to more opportunities for cultural exchange, allowing traditional skills to shine on the international stage.”
