Rules and Regulations

We reserve the right to add, delete, or adapt policies in the best interests of participant safety and facility management.

  • Use facilities and equipment at your own risk.
  • Persons under 15 are not permitted to use the fitness area (weight training, cardio machine, and functional training area).All users must abide by all posted regulations, signage, and directions provided by the program management.
  • Whenever there is a scheduled activity, including but not limited to PE, varsity, intramural, and club events, please avoid using the facility to prevent any interruptions.
  • Personal items should not be placed on the floor, beside windows, on workout machines or in other areas where these items may be disruptive to other members. All personal items must be stored in the lockers or cubbies provided.
  • Use headphones when listening to music.
  • Non-athletic shoes and all shoes that leave black marks are not allowed on sport surfaces.
  • Appropriate clothing must be worn at all times.
  • Do not remove any workout equipment from its designated area.
  • Return workout or sport equipment to its rightful place after use.
  • Only authorized staff can adjust the temperature, lights, or other facility settings.
  • Food and snacks are not allowed in workout or sport spaces. All drinks must be carried in non-glass containers with a lid.
  • The use of skateboards, roller blades, bikes, or other conveyances and vehicles are not permitted in the Sport Complex (both indoor and outdoor facilities).
  • All structured group activities must be scheduled through DKU Athletics.
  • Facilities will secure their doors 15 minutes prior to closing;  Members who do not leave on time, will be charged late fee of 25RMB per incident. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Members may be asked to leave and have gym access suspended.
  • Any individuals who violate access policies may be removed from the facility immediately, their membership terminated, and be reported to DKU Conduct office. This includes, but is not limited to, opening a facility door to allow other individuals access, using another individual’s ID card, purposefully damaging facilities, and intentionally breaking facility usage rules.
  • Report any faulty or broken equipment to Sport Complex staff and do not use.
  • DKU Sports Complex members can check out a bike at the Sports Complex front desk for recreational biking.
  • Bikes are for recreational use only. Intensive or heavy use is not permitted.
  • We highly recommend checking out a helmet for safety.
  • Check the bike’s condition before use. If damaged, do not use it and report the issue to Sports Complex staff.
  • Comply with Chinese transportation laws when riding the bike, including adhering to traffic rules and safety regulations.
  • Only Athletics department-issued bikes are allowed in the Athletics bike parking area. Personal bikes parked here will incur a 25 RMB charge per incident.
  • Properly secure the Athletics bike by locking it when parking. Lost bikes will incur a replacement fee.
  • Bikes must be returned by the Sports Complex’s closing time on the same day. Long-term checkouts require prior approval from the front desk with a valid reason. Failure to return on time will result in 25 RMB late fees.
  • Unreasonable damage caused by improper use will lead to a charge.
  • To check out bikes for group activities, you must send an email to sports@dukekunshan.edu.cn in advance.

DKU Sports Complex Children/Minors Policy

 

Purpose:
Duke Kunshan University Athletics department is committed to fostering a community that values health and wellness. We recognize that minors, as members of the faculty and staff’s family community, play an integral role in nurturing a culture of well-being. To further support family involvement, minors will have open access to the Sports Complex during open hours on weekends. This policy outlines the terms of membership and usage of the Sports Complex by minors to ensure their safe participation in appropriate activities.

Scope:
This policy applies to all minors (individuals under the age of 18) who are family members of the university faculty and staff and wish to access the Sports Complex facilities.

Policy Details:

  1. Eligibility for Membership:
    • Minors must be direct family members (i.e., children or legal dependents) of current DKU faculty or staff.
    • All minors must be registered with the DKU Sport Complex by a parent or legal guardian.

    • All minors must have a waiver signed by a parent or a legal guardian on file.
    • Minors under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
    • Certain areas of the Sports Complex will be off-limits to minors due to the risk associated with high-impact activities or equipment that is not designed for individuals under the age of 18 (Table 1).
    • Access for minors is restricted to weekends unless there is a designated organized class or activity for them during the weekdays. This ensures both safety and proper supervision, allowing minors to participate in activities that are appropriate for their age and physical development.
  • Minors will be issued wristbands at the front desk corresponding to their access level and must be worn while using Sports Complex facilities.

    • All minors must follow the Sports Complex rules and guide
    • Parents or guardians shall ensure that the minors abide by all posted regulations, signage, and directions posted in the Sports Complex and/or provided by the Department of Athletics.
    • Parents, guardians, and accompanying adults are responsible for the behavior and supervision of their minor(s) and for explaining the Sports Complex rules and guidelines.
  1. Emergency Procedures:
    • In the event of an emergency, Sports Complex staff will act to ensure the safety and well-being of all patrons, including minors.
    • Parents or guardians must provide emergency contact information and remain reachable while minors are using the Sports Complex facilities.
  2. Violation of Policy:
    • Violations of this policy may result in the suspension of facility access privileges for the minor and, in certain circumstances, the faculty or staff member associated with the minor.
  3. Policy Amendment:
    • This policy is subject to change at the discretion of the Department of Athletics . Any amendments will be communicated promptly to all affected parties.
  4. Acknowledgment of Risk:
    • All parents or guardians of minors must acknowledge the associated risk from using the Sport Complex and sign the risk and release of liability form before accessing the Sport Complex facilities.

Implementation:
This policy shall be implemented immediately and communicated to all faculty, staff, and potential minor members through appropriate university channels. This policy will also be available on the Athletics website and at the service desk of the Sports Complex.

This policy is in addition to the Rules and Regulations – Athletics as announced on the DKU Athletics website. In the event of any inconsistency, this policy shall prevail.

The Department of Athletics  is dedicated to creating an inclusive and safe environment for all its members while recognizing the limitations required to maintain a secure and comfortable space for users of all ages. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the university community in upholding these standards.

The participant must follow all posted or communicated policies and procedures at the climbing wall. Any disagreements or concerns will be communicated to the professional staff of the Sports Operation Team. Climbing Facility staff reserve the right to limit individual wall time if there are climbers waiting.

General Behavior and Safety

  1. Courteous and Safety-Oriented Behavior: All participants must behave in a courteous and safety-oriented manner at all times.
  2. Prohibited Actions: Abusive or inappropriate language or actions are not permitted.
  3. Substance Use: Participants under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal substances will be dismissed immediately.
  4. Throwing Objects: Throwing objects is strictly prohibited.
  5. Disruptive Actions: Any actions that disrupt the belayer and climber’s attention or endanger any participant will result in immediate dismissal.
 

Staff Authority and Emergency Procedures

  1. Staff Authority: Climbing Facility staff have the authority to dismiss any climber that disregards or challenges climbing wall policies or procedures.
  2. Emergency Procedures: Climbing Facility staff reserve the right to stop climbing and close the facility at any time for safety or emergency situations.
 

Equipment Use and Standards

  1. Approved Personal Items: Only personal climbing harnesses, helmets, shoes, and chalk bags are permitted in the climbing facility. Personal belay devices will not be permitted to use on the wall.
  2. Equipment Responsibility: Participants are fully responsible for the proper use and condition of all their personal climbing equipment. Harnesses and helmets must comply with UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) standards, CE (Conformité Européenne) standards, or GB (Guobiao – Chinese National Standard).
  3. Provided Equipment: Equipment provided by the facility should only be used according to the provided information and instruction.
  4. Reporting Issues: Participants should report any damaged or malfunctioning equipment immediately to Climbing Facility staff.
  5. Chalk Use: No loose chalk is allowed. The non-liquid chalk must be kept in a chalk ball within a chalk bag.
 

Attire and Personal Items

  1. Footwear: Closed-toe climbing shoes are the only shoes permitted while climbing or belaying. No sandals, bare feet, athletic shoes, or boots are allowed.
  2. Rental Shoes: All rental shoes must be worn with socks.
  3. Jewelry and Accessories: All jewelry and other accessories that could interfere with climbing or belaying must be removed prior to climbing to prevent injury.
  4. Hair and Clothing: Long hair should be tied back before climbing, and loose clothing should be tucked in.
  5. Personal Items: Participants are not permitted to adjust and place climbing holds. Personal items must be kept in the cubbies and away from the climbing area.
  6. Food and Beverages: Food and beverages must be in a secure container and kept outside the climbing area.
 

Climbing Practices

  1. Belay Certification: To belay other climbers, belayers must obtain belay certification by attending the belay workshop and passing the test that organized by the Athletics Department. Any unsafe belaying will result in a revoked belay certification,  and re-take the Belay Test and possibly the Belay Workshop, if necessary.
  2. Pre-Climb Checks: Climbers and belayers are responsible for checking knots, harnesses, and belay system setup prior to every climb.
  3. Climbing Speed: Climbers should never climb faster than their belayer can belay.
  4. Route Adherence: To reduce the risk of a hazardous swing, climbers should stay on route at all times.
  5. Bouldering Limit: A maximum of two climbers are allowed on the bouldering wall at any one time to reduce potential clashes.
  6. Route Spacing: Skip one route at the top rope and speed wall to reduce potential clashes.
  7. Permitted Climbing Forms: Top-rope climbing, speed climbing, and bouldering are the only forms of climbing permitted.
  8. Climbing Commands: All participants must utilize appropriate climbing commands at all times.
 

By adhering to these policies, we aim to provide a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable climbing experience for all participants at the DKU Sports Complex Climbing Wall.

  • All strength equipment should remain in its designated location and not be moved or relocated.
  • Group activity or training is prohibited unless pre-arranged with DKU Athletics staff.
  • Weights must be controlled to the floor. Slamming of weights will not be tolerated.
  • Equipment is only to be used for its intended purpose.
  • The use of outside equipment is not permitted.
  • When using chalk (liquid or powder), members must clean surfaces after use.
  • Users must re-rack all weights after use at their appropriate location.
  • Wipe down equipment after each use.
  • Shirts and closed toe athletic shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Do not stand on the benches.
  • Personal items should not be placed on the floor, beside windows, on workout machines or in other areas where these items may be disruptive to other members.
  • We reserve the right to enforce other policies as is deemed appropriate for a safe and friendly environment.
 

Broken, damaged or malfunctioning equipment should be reported immediately to the Sports Complex staff or Front Desk.

  • Whenever there is a scheduled activity, including but not limited to PE, varsity, intramural, and club events, please avoid using the football pitch to prevent any interruptions.
  • Proper athletic footwear must be worn at all times. Any footwear that damages the pitch surface is strictly forbidden.
  • For group reservations, contact DKU Athletics.
  • No equipment is allowed to be removed from the functional training area.
  • Do not block the walking/running lane or put other users at risk of injury.
  • Only perform medicine ball slams on the turf.
  • Tire exercises are only permitted on the turf.
  • Prohibited actions include medicine ball throws upward, forward, overhead, or against the wall, as they may cause damage to the lights, walls, and glass, and may disturb or injure other users.
  • Do not climb to the top of the racks.
  • Refrain from hanging in a reverse position on the racks.
  • The main basketball court is for scheduled PE, varsity, intramural, and club events only. No pickup games unless authorized by DKU Athletics.
  • All sport games including basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, squash, and all others, are subject to house game rules in order to allow all members the time to play.
  • Proper athletic footwear and attire must be worn at all times.
  • Belongings should be stored in the provided cubbies or lockers, not kept on the courts.
  • Do not adjust sports equipment. Contact staff for assistance with any faulty equipment and set up.
  • All lanes are counterclockwise.
  • The track is 260 meters long. There are three loops: small, medium, and large Please follow the arrows and do not run in a figure 8.
  • All individuals should be walking or jogging. Do not block lanes, including by standing and talking, stretching, or doing non-running exercises on a track. Use designated areas next to the track for static activities.
  • As a rule, slower walkers/runners should stay in the BLUE lane and allow faster walkers/runners to pass on the GREEN lane.
  • No accessory equipment is permitted (weights, physio-balls, etc.) on the track. Do not carry anything that may obstruct another walking/running lane or injure another user.
  • Use caution when entering and exiting the track. For safety reasons, do not stop while on the track. If you need to rest, please do so in one of the corner areas.
  • For safety, do not “sprint”;the track is intended for general fitness jogging/walking and its size is not conductive for sprint workouts, relays, group workouts, or the like.
  • As a courtesy to others, avoid walking/running “side by side” at busy times, as this restricts traffic flow.
  • Proper athletic running shoes are required.
  • Be courteous and respectful of other runners.
  •  

Lockers and cubbies are provided for members to store personal items during workouts. Personal items should not be placed on the floor, beside windows, on workout machines or in other areas where these items may be disruptive to other members.

  • To use a locker, rent a locker key at the Front Desk for free. After completing your workout, please remove all personal items from the locker and return the key to Front Desk. Items found in lockers after closing will be delivered to the Community Center front desk. Members who repeatedly leave items in lockers may be charged a cleaning fee.25 RMB per occurence/day.
  • If members do not wish to use lockers, they may use cubbies located in different areas of the Sport Complex to store personal items during workouts. Items found in cubbies after closing will be stored at the Sport Complex Front Desk for 24 hours, after which they will be discarded. 
  • Lockers must be secured and no belongings left unattended. DKU Athletics is not responsible for any damaged property, lost, or stolen items.
  • For privacy, usage of cell phones, cameras, and devices that capture pictures or video are prohibited while in locker rooms.
  • Locker rooms are to be kept clean and orderly. Please clean any unclean surface you may create.
  • Locker keys not returned at the end of the day will be charged late return fee of 25 RMB per occurence/day.
  • If locker key is lost, members will be charged a replacement fee and any fees associated with lock replacement.
  • Shoes may not be worn on the padded surface.
  • Only athletic shoes that not leave black marks are allowed.
  • During open hours, the studio is available on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Please be mindful of all users and do not monopolize the studio space.
  • Please don’t use the sauna if you meet the following conditions: those with heart disease, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, circulatory or respiratory problems, seizures, epilepsy, pregnant, those who are using prescribed or illegal drugs or under the influence of alcohol.
  • It is strictly prohibited to use kindling in the sauna room.
  • Users are suggested to shower before using the sauna.
  • Paper products are not permitted in the sauna.
  • No jewelry or any other metal items.
  • Limit your exposure to 15 minutes per sitting. Those feeling dizzy or faint should leave the sauna immediately, & consult a physician.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after using the sauna.
  • A bathing suit or other appropriate clothing must be worn in the sauna.
  • Do not smoke, eat, or drink beverages in the sauna room.
  • Maximum five person at one time.
  • NO cellphone!!!
  • Squash is the only sport permitted on the squash courts.
  • Be courteous and do not monopolize courts. Please limit play to 1 hour when others are waiting to play.
  • Protective eyewear is strongly recommended.
  • Keep the door locked while you are playing on the squash court.
  • Only squash shoes may be worn on courts.
  • Maximum of two (2) active players are allowed at time on the courts.

  • Swimmer’s Health and Conditions:
    • Swimmers should stay within their ability level, considering any illnesses or disabilities. Inform lifeguards of any medical conditions before using the swimming pool, hydrotherapy pools, and sauna.

 

  • Lifeguard Instructions:
    • Always follow the lifeguard’s instructions.

 

  • Diving Rules:
    • Diving is permitted for swimming practice and from the starting blocks only when the swimming lane is empty. Obtain permission from the lifeguard before diving.

 

  • Hygiene and Safety:
    • Shower before entering the swimming pool.
    • Glass containers or any food are not allowed in the swimming pool hall.
    • Refrain from swimming when sick, and avoid spitting into the pool or overflow gutters at any time. It is highly recommended not to swim within 48 hours of recovering from sickness.
    • Swimming with open cuts and sores is prohibited.

 

  • Locker Usage:
    • Use lockers to store all non-swimming personal belongings such as shoes, non-swim clothes, books, etc.

 

Attire Guidelines:

  • All users must wear appropriate swimwear and use a swimming cap while in the pool. Proper swim attire is defined as clothing designed for use in the water. Specific examples are listed below for reference. Additionally, swimwear must not indecently expose body parts or be transparent. This list is not exhaustive, and management reserves the right to determine whether swimwear is appropriate:
  • Allowed Items:
    • Women’s one and two-piece bathing suits
    • Men’s Jammers or Speedo
    • Board Shorts
    • Rash Guards
    • Religious swimwear (e.g., burkini)
  • Prohibited Items:
    • Bathing suits with inadequate coverage (e.g., thong)
    • Athletic shorts and pants (e.g., running, basketball, volleyball, yoga, etc.)
    • Undergarments (e.g., sports bras, underwear, compression shorts, boxers, briefs, etc.)
    • Clothing with grommets (e.g., denim, khaki shorts or pants, etc.)
    • Cotton shirts (e.g., t-shirts, tank tops, etc.)
    • Only flip-flops and sandals may be worn in the swimming hall; no outdoor shoes are allowed.
  • Tennis and pickleball are the only sport permitted.
  • Be courteous and do not monopolize the courts. Please limit play to 1 hour when others are waiting.
  • Do not just adjust the netting equipment. Please report any malfunctions to Front Desk.

• It is suggested to bring a towel to class and please clean the equipment after each workout.
• Exercise classes are first come, first serve, except for classes with pre-registration. We reserve the right to restrict classes for unregistered users.
• Appropriate footwear (non-marking) must be worn except during yoga.
• Do not lean on mirrors.
• Groups must submit reservation requests by emailing the activity details to sports@dukekunshan.edu.cn at least 5 working days in advance.
• Equipment is not to be removed from dance or yoga studios.
• Personal yoga mats cannot be left overnight in the studio. They will be moved to lost and found and then discarded after 24 hours.
• Use of loudspeakers is prohibited unless for Athletics Department-approved group exercise classes, training or activities.
• Report any broken or out of order equipment to the instructor or Sports Complex staff.

Court reservations can be made 24 hours in advance through the DKU Athletics website.


Please note that members who fail to comply with the policies and rules set out here risk being ejected immediately from the Sports Complex and having their membership suspended or revoked.
