Event Recap | 5K Runners in the rain

On September 3, 2022, 129 runners at Dayu Bay enjoyed the great view of Dayu Lake and the cool drizzle while completing their Saturday 5km. It was a cloudy and rainy morning for park run #11! The rain wasn’t enough to flood Park runners’ passion. This was the first Park Run this semester, we are glad to reunite with our old friends and meet new members. 210 people registered for the event and 129 finally attended.

We have reached one milestone this time. Congratulations to Zhifeng Huang for finishing the 5k course at 18mins 40s and breaking the best record of DKU Park Run!

After the Park Run, we interviewed some runners who impressed us a lot, and here are their stories with Park Run:

Jovana (first from right) with students from Kunshan Middle School

Jovana is a teacher at Kunshan Middle School International Center, and this time she brought about 20 students with her to enjoy running together. “I want them to have an opportunity to go outside and meet different people in Park Run.” She explained that one of the most attractive points of Park Run for her is that it is organized by DKU — an international community. She believes letting her students be engaged in Park Run can also help them to get to know how a program that involves diverse community works, which will be beneficial to their future study in foreign universities. At the end of the interview, she shared a piece of exciting news that she will bring about 50 students to come next time. Looking forward to their participation!

Mengjie and Gary with the youngest participants in parkrun history

Mengjie and Gary are a couple who stand out in a crowd because they finished their running with a baby carriage! Moreover, their 2 years old kid in the pushchair has become the youngest participant in Park Run. Gary expressed that, the major reason for them to take the kid is that no one else could take care of their child if they both leave home, and they knew the Park Run is a family-friendly activity. This is his very first time joining an outdoor sports activity in the past year because he was too busy with the child. At the same time, they believe it is a good chance to let the child commune with nature and take part in community activities early on. Gary added that, though Mengjie and he both work in DKU, Park Run is still a good social event for them to get in touch with colleagues from different departments. From his words, we feel more than delighted that we created an opportunity for new parents to come back to the runways with no scruples.

The record breaker — Zhifeng Huang

The record breaker — Zhifeng Huang talked about his feelings after running with us. Different from most participants, he is an experienced runner who is also the leader of a running group in Kunshan. His regular daily training is about 15-20km, 5km is a piece of cake for him. However, Park Run is attractive to him because of the relaxing atmosphere. It is different from the formal competitions he participated in before. He thinks Park Run is a great place for him to bring his daughter and get her exposed to nature from childhood. He mentioned that this is also his daughter’s first time finishing 5km, it’s a good start for her. We do hope that she will enjoy running and keep running in the future.

The NO.001 Runner— Amy

The NO.001 Runner— Amy shared her experience of growing up with the Park Run. This is her first time finishing 5 km in the Park Run. For her, Park Run can test her improvement in running, she could feel the change each time. She still remembers the first time she joined Park Run, she ran 2.5 km at that time. But after regular training, she could handle 5km now. She highlighted that the Park Run is friendly for beginners because there’s no cut-off time, even jogging and quick walking are acceptable here. It is the freedom of speed that encouraged her to come and try at first. In addition to running, the social part is also important for Amy, she thinks this is a positive community full of encouraging words. The history of an activity is always accompanied by each participant’s changes and growth, we are pleased to see Park Run could be the one who accompanies Amy’s growth in running.

The next Park Run event is scheduled on next Saturday, September 17 and is now open for registration. Please join us again next week!
