Our state-of-the-art Sports Complex, scheduled to open this coming fall, will be the jewel in the crown of Duke Kunshan’s phase two campus expansion.
Covering 13,000 square meters, the equivalent of two football fields, and standing four stories tall, the building will not only be the largest on campus, it also will be equipped with the latest in sports and recreation facilities and technologies.
In short, it’ll be a game changer.
Since the 2018 launch of Duke Kunshan’s undergraduate degree program, DKU Athletics has been developing a highly diverse physical education program, providing courses for students in sports and recreation, health and wellness, and much more. In addition, we have facilitated the setting up of more than 15 student sport clubs, as well as supported a variety of events and activities on and off campus.
The new Sports Complex will allow us to expand our scope significantly.
Among the main attractions will be the basketball arena – our home court – complete with practice courts and seating for 500 spectators. The name Duke is synonymous with college basketball in the United States, and we aim to make Duke Kunshan a powerhouse of the sport in China.
In addition, the complex will include a full-size soccer field, and facilities for badminton, volleyball, tennis, squash and racket ball, table tennis, golf, baseball, pool, archery, darts, fencing, and more. There will be running tracks and an indoor swimming pool; areas for cardio training, weight and strength training, CrossFit and functional training; a climbing wall; spin and rowing rooms; a selection of dance and yoga studios; a martial arts dojo; and space dedicated to the latest in immersive virtual reality fitness tech.
“Over the past four years, we’ve worked hard to provide as many opportunities as possible for our international campus community to participate in sports and recreation. This Sports Complex takes us to the next level,” said DKU Athletics Director Zarko Krkeljas.
“These new facilities, which community members will be able to book through an integrated online reservation system, will provide even more opportunities on campus for students, faculty and staff to interact, have fun, and invest in their physical and mental well-being.”
Krkeljas said that, with the advanced competition spaces, DKU Athletics also will establish partnerships, tournaments and other events that bring together not only the campus community but also students from schools and universities around China and the world, as well as professional athletes.
