WUHAN, CHINA – On April 11, a martial arts exchange titled “Martial Arts Elite Exchange Competition” jointly held by Wuhan University and Duke Kunshan University was brought to a successful close at Wuhan University’s Wind and Rain Gymnasium. The event, themed “Integration and Friendship through Martial Arts,” aimed to deepen sports cooperation and promote the heritage of Chinese martial arts culture through traditional martial arts performances and cultural exchanges.
Performance Highlight
During the opening ceremony at 5 p.m., the Deputy Director of the Sports Department at Wuhan University delivered a speech noting, “Martial arts are the treasured jewels of Chinese culture, and we aspire to use martial arts as the medium to build platforms for inter-university and cross-cultural dialogue.” Wuhan University’s Martial Arts Team commenced the event with a performance of the national-level intangible cultural heritage item “Yellow Crane Tower Dragon Dance,” captivating the audience with its majestic presence.

In the technical demonstration segment of the event, the Duke Kunshan University Tai Chi Team showcased classic Tai Chi sequences, including the 24-Form Tai Chi, 42-Form Tai Chi, and Chen-style Tai Chi, along with innovative performances using Tai Chi swords and fans—a representation of Tai Chi’s philosophy that blends strength with softness. Wuhan University’s Martial Arts Team displayed a more combat-oriented style featuring nunchaku techniques, southern broadsword, and Bajiquan. Their masterful “Overlord Spear” technique, characterized by fluid offensive and defensive transitions, left the audience in awe.

A special cultural exchange segment featured mutual gift-giving and comprehensive presentations on the history of each institution’s martial arts clubs. Duke Kunshan University highlighted its achievements in the “International Tai Chi Dissemination” project, while Wuhan University shared insights into their innovative “Martial Arts Plus” development strategy, enhancing mutual understanding. The event concluded with award presentations and an exchange of commemorative gifts. Participants from both schools noted not only an improvement in their skills but also the formation of valuable friendships.
The successful staging of this event has not only provided a platform for martial arts enthusiasts from both universities to showcase and learn from each other, but has also breathed new life into the inheritance and development of traditional Chinese martial arts culture. It has forged new pathways for cultural exchange between the two universities.
